Als man, ga ik nooit met een vriend samen na het shoppen gezellig nog even een koffietje doen in zo’n bomvol hip tentje in Amsterdam. Helemaal niet als het regent. En dan met je tassen tussen de laptops een plekje zoeken om stijf naast andere mensen terecht te komen die hetzelfde plan hadden.
Nu is het zover. Ik ben samen met mijn beste vriend beland in een soort koffie-paradijs.
Bij het uittrekken van mijn jas schatte ik de ruimte, om mij heen, nèt even verkeerd in waardoor ik met het zware natte ding de menukaart van de tafel achter ons af mepte. Zo vol dus. Het lijkt qua bewegingsruimte meer op een strandvakantievliegtuig dan op horeca. Maar ach, wat geeft het.
Als ik mezelf zo smal mogelijk heb gemaakt en eindelijk zit heb ik alweer spijt. Waarom wilde ik dit ook al weer? Na een diepe zucht en wat dunnetjes lachend rondkijken, volgt de kaart. Voor mij altijd weer een stress-moment. Ik neem namelijk standaard hetzelfde als mijn vaste tafelgenoot, mijn vrouw. Die weet het namelijk precies en zij weet ook precies wat ik wil. Nooit stress dus, voor mij.
Keuzes
Maar nu liggen de rollen anders. Mijn vrouw is er niet en mijn vriend vraagt nu wat ik neem. Blijkbaar beslist zijn vrouw ook steevast wat hij drinkt. Een onhandige situatie die we snel moeten oplossen. Er is namelijk weinig tijd want ik zie dat een jonge dame met een soort iPad al op mijn beslissing wacht.
De kaart met koffiekeuzes is te bizar voor woorden en telt maar liefst 2 pagina’s. De puber staat nu met haar schortje tégen ons tafeltje aan en zet wat tijdsdruk op onze bestelling.
Ik geef het hangijzer, wat met de seconde heter wordt trouwens, nu door naar mijn goede vriend en als hij antwoordt “ik neem wat jij neemt”, sta ik schaakmat. Ik móet de knoop doorhakken. En wel nú!
“Doe maar twee koffie”, zeg ik met een gespeeld beheerste stem.
Zij: “Wat voor koffie?”
Ik hoopte tijd gerekt te hebben maar dat mislukte. Het voelt nu alsof ik bij een boze corrupte douanier sta met een verlopen paspoort. Door de vele opties zie ik níets wat ik herken. Flat White, Black Eye, Mocha, Americano, Bombón, Con Panna, een Dry Cappuccino (wat is dát in godsnaam!), Breve en zèlfs een Mocha Breve..
Ik sla dicht. Hulp van de overkant van de tafel hoef ik ook niet verwachten. Ik heb immers de kaart.
“Twee gewone koffie voor ons, met gewone koffieroom? Kan dat?”
Ze keek me aan alsof ik na 25 jaar op Borneo met een peniskoker had rondgelopen en precíes die middag voor het eerst na een kwart eeuw, bij haar, een koffie ging bestellen.
“En wat voor melk?” Ze verliest haar geduld en leunt nu op één heup. Het non verbale teken dat mijn tijd om is.
Ik: “Koffiemelk!?”
“Koffiemelk hebben we niet, wel havermelk, amandelmelk, lamamelk, sojamelk en ezelmelk.
Ik: “Oh, prima doe maar ezelmelk. Twee Flat White met ezelmelk. Lekker.” Voor ik het wist bestelde ik het. Ik knakte; de druk was te hoog voor me geworden.
Ze liep zuchtend weg.
We keken elkaar aan en mijn vriend vroeg. “Hóe doen die wijven van ons dat?”
“Wat.?” Vroeg ik terug.
Hij: “Koffie bestellen.”
