Golf op tv kán wat saai zijn, maar de Ryder Cup is absoluut een uitzondering. Zeker nu Tiger Woods er bij is.
Scroll even door de laatste posts op youtube, twitter, facebook en zie wat de recente overwinning van Tiger Woods in het Tour Championship, de 80ste, afgelopen weekend teweeg bracht. Hysterische mensenmassa’s. Tienduizenden mensen, opeengepakt langs de achttiende hole, hielden hun mobieltje in de lucht, in de hoop een glimp van de man op te vangen. Ze schreeuwden en scandeerden: TI-GER! TI-GER!
Waar ging het mis?
Al die mensenmassa’s langs de fairway waar Tiger Woods liep – we keken er jaren geleden niet echt meer van op. Tiger was nu eenmaal een fenomeen, en het was bijna een vertrouwde aanblik.
Tot het misging – in zijn privéleven, en even later ging het ook in golf bergafwaarts. De topsport had z’n tol geëist; het lijf leek niet meer te willen. Een knieoperatie volgde, een rugoperatie, en daarna volgden er meer. Er was pijn, en heel veel pijnmedicatie. Een jaar geleden was hij nog aan het revalideren van zijn vierde rugoperatie. Zou hij ooit nog terugkeren? Zou hij ooit nog op jacht gaan naar een zege, laat staan een Majorzege? Er waren nog maar weinig mensen die daarin geloofden.
Kijkcijfer Kanon
Maar afgelopen weekend was Tiger er weer. Zondag baande hij zich een weg naar de green van East Lake, waar duizenden fans hysterisch schreeuwden en renden om een glimp van hem op te kunnen vangen. Miljoenen tv-kijkers over de hele wereld waren er getuige van. Kijkcijfers waren 206% (!) hoger in vergelijking met hetzelfde toernooi vorig jaar.
Niet onverdienstelijk, maar toch veroordeeld tot een bijrol waren Rory McIlroy, maar ook Justin Rose, die zondag eigenlijk de hoofdprijs won, de FedEx Cup van 10 miljoen, en Dustin Johnson, die zondag de nieuwe nummer-1 van de wereld werd. Maar dat zijn de meesten alweer vergeten. Het ging ook niet om hen. Het ging maar om één man: Tiger Woods.
Zo zal het ook in de Ryder Cup gaan. Rennen en duwen voor een goed zicht op Tiger. Juichen. Schreeuwen. Joelen. Spelers van Team US en Team Europe hebben zich ongetwijfeld voorbereid op het Tiger Effect, zo mooi verwoord door Tiger zelf:
”The art of the clap is gone. People don’t clap because how can you clap when you have a cell phone in your hand? People are now screaming and they are pretty loud, and especially late in the day when it’s hot and they have tipped back a few, it gets even louder. I think this week will be the same. But even louder.”
De trotse bezitters van een toegangskaart verheugen zich er ongetwijfeld al op. Of je nu voor Europa bent, of Amerika: iedereen wil Tiger zien. En iedereen wil Tiger zien winnen.
